1996 Honda Accord Shutting off Intermittently Sign In

Hi I have a 1996 Honda Accord 4 cylinder that is intermittently shutting off. The vehicle will shut off while driving or while idling and after it does this it is difficult to start back but will start. I have had the vtec solenoid, the valve cover gasket, the spark plugs, wires and distributor rotor/cap replaced as well.

I appreciate any help or advice. THANKS

EDIT: May 16 2013, Replaced the Main Relay/Fuel Pump Relay, still having stalling. I do notice that the stalling is much more frequent when the car has been running a while. I was able (when driving/testing) to let the vehicle sit for 10 or so minutes and it would start back up immediately, but if I tried as soon as it stalled I would have difficulty. The Main Relay and casing is getting very hot to the touch after driving for about an hour or so.

EDIT: May 31 2013, Replaced the Ignition Switch this morning hoping that might be the problem as it looks like one of the only things I can still do on my own. I am still getting stalling or the engine/tachometer dropping and immediately restarting. I got it home, let it sit for 5 or so minutes and it cranked right up.

here are my specs EDIT: (No check engine light is on)

Here are a couple of videos I took today (June 3) one is a surge while driving at a highway speed (80mph) on even/level terrain and constant speed. The second one is after driving (you can see the Odometer differences) about 95 miles testing it.

When it doesn't want to start does the check engine light bulb check with the ignition on?

Honda's were kind of known for no starts and stalling being caused by faulty main relays under the dash.

Check out this vid:

That is one place to start.

Ok, watched the video you linked to and removed the main relay, inspected it, cleaned it and according to the video(s) I watched I did not see any bad solders. I have more of a stalling problem than a starting problem, would it be worth buying a new or refurb/used main relay anyway? Could these symptoms be a combination fuel pump/filter and relay. I'm having trouble replicating the problem which is good I guess. I would still like to get my reliability back.

Thanks again for your help

The main relay is a common problem on Honda. It may not be the relay causing your problem. When it comes to intermittent stalling problems, those can be hard to diagnose without proper equipment. You on the other hand may be able to figure it out IF the engine doesn't restart long enough for you to connect equipment up to catch what is missing.

If it doesn't restart things to check would be:

(1) fuel pressure
(2) injector pulse
(3) ignition (spark)

One of more of those things is going to be missing when it doesn't want to start. Once you determine what is missing, that will give you direction for further diagnosis.

If it does restart after stall or no restart happens to short for you to catch, that is when you have to whip out the expensive tools such as a lab scope. Most people don't have one laying around or understand how to interpret their wave forms, so the guessing game (swaptronics) is the only resort. That can get expensive.

Ok the Main Relay Part Number RZ 0088 Mitsuba has been replaced with a brand new in box part. updated original post to reflect this. Still stalling after use.

How would I go about checking these three things you mentioned? And it will restart after sitting for a few minutes or so. Is it possible the main relay I bought was bad out of the box?

1) fuel pressure
(2) injector pulse
(3) ignition (spark)

Thanks again for your help.

Re: 1996 Honda Accord Shutting off Intermittently Sign In

1) is a little hard to check because you need a fuel pressure gauge and adapters so you can plumb it into the fuel rail.

2) can be checked by using a NOID light or lab scope. Most autoparts stores sell NOID lights.

3) is checked with a spark tester. The adjustable spark tester is the best one to use. Spark should be able to jump a 3/4 inch gap.
