1996 GMC Jimmy Gas Cap

Hello Everyone!
I just bought a gas cap for my wife's 1996 GMC Jimmy, and it has a black plastic ring around the original. I would like to know the best way to get that ring off without damaging it! Any suggestions?

Sorry I’m not sure what you mean.
If it’s the tether strap from the car to the cap you may not get it off without breaking it.
But if there's a will there's a way. LOL
