1996 Chevy Beretta Fuel Pressure Relief Sign In

I got a 1996 Chevy Beretta with a 3.1 V-6. I was attempting to replace the fuel filter and in doing so I consulted my Haynes Manuel for help. The Manuel suggested I disconnected the fuel tank connector and start the motor until the fuel runs through the lines. My car is not equipped with a fuel tank connector or at least I could not locate it.
I began to disconnect the fuel filter and as I loosened the connector fuel began to escape under pressure. I then tighten the connector and searched the internet for an answer.
Still I am left clueless.
Can someone explain what I need to do to relieve the fuel pressure so I can change the fuel filter?
Thank you in advance.

It's not a real big deal. The pressure will only be there for a couple seconds. just make sure it doesn't spray in your eyes or anything and you'll be fine. Crack it loose slowly with a pan to catch the fuel.

The way Hammer said is probably the best/fastest way, you can put a rag around the fitting to deflect the spray. If you don't want to do it on your back, you can depress the schrader valve on the fuel rail under the hood. It by the frt of the motor just behind the p/s pump... It's still gonna spray for a couple of secs
