My husband and I have recently purchased this vehicle. The couple who had it before us left the dome light on for 3 days and this occurred 2 years ago. They have not drove the car since. The car will start right up but as soon as i take my hand off of the key and the ignition, the car dies....what could be the cause of this. This vehicle as i have listed in the subject line is a 95 oldsmobile 98 regency elite, 3.8L and the mileage is 204,539

? What did you do to even make it crank? This car just sat with a dead battery for two years and presumably two year old fuel ( about can't be any good) it's near certain to have several things to do, clean out, replace and still find surprises.

Apparently you have it cranking and a quick run but what else have you done to bring this back from the dead?

Drain the gas tank, change the fuel filter and put in fresh fuel. It will probably run like crap at first but drive it for 100 miles and see if it clears out. Prior to driving it anywhere you need to get the wheels off and give it a close lookover at all the brakes. Going is optional, stopping isn't. Also take apart your air ducting to look in it. Rats love sitting cars, especially heater ducts and air intakes. Make very cozy homes for rodents and not good to suck down the engine.

This is a nightmare. Car was left for junk over a dead battery over two years ago with over 200,000 miles and about 18 years old. I don't know where to begin. Do you even believe the story on this?

Pick a plan of attack starting from scratch with this thing,

WELL I DECIDED TO GO OUTSIDE AND TAKE A LOOK FOR MYSELF....MY HUSBAND IS MECHANICALLY ILLITERATE AND I HAVE BEEN DOING WORK ON MY OWN VEHICLES FOR A WHILE WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY DAD.....I FIXED THIS CAR IN LESS THAN 2 MINUTES......IT TURNS OUT I HAD A MAJOR VACCUM LEAK.....THERE WAS A VACCUM HOSE UNPLUGGED THAT WAS NOT EASILY SEEN THIS FIRST TIME....I PLUGGED IT IN AND SHE PURRS LIKE A KITTEN. THAT EXPLAINS THE BACKFIRING WHEN I WAS TRYING TO KEEP IT RUNNING WITH MY FOOT ON THE GAS

Good job on that and glad its running. Sure your husband is never going to live that one down, especially when you make sure his friends find out.
