1995 dodge ram speedometer

1995 dodge ram speedometer

I have a 95 dodge ram 1500 with automatic 318 the speedometer jumps around from 20 to 45 miles an hour no matter how fast or slow your going. Not exactly sure what the problem could be please help

It could be the Vehicle Speed sensor or the speedometer head itself.

Right I didn't know if it had a cable or what! Could that make the cruise control not work also

The cruise control can't work without a speed signal so it's probably the VSS causing it.

Hook up a graphing multimeter or scope to the speed sensor circuit and see if the waveform is glitching out. It should be next to the fishing poles in the garage..
I believe the engine controller also needs to see the speed sensor signal, so you might be able to tell if the speed sensor or wiring is the problem if the PCM is setting a speed sensor code.

I do not have access to any fancy equipment so can anyone tell me how many speed sensors are on a 95 dodge ram 1500 and where they are located on the truck

One in the back of the transmission and one in the top of the differential.

This one has got the feeling of getting parts "thrown at it"......
Well....If you're gonna gamble & the ABS light is on.........I would focus my attention one the one in the diff.......

There is no abs light on so does this mean it is more than likely the sensor on the transmission?

May I suggest that if this is down to throwing parts if just two now and reasonable, do just one first check if that did the job then if not do the other. Nice to know which was the problem or chance you get it the first time. The toss everything at a problem is almost always a lousy approach. Worse is if you have the bad luck of a bad new part it really confuses the real fix - all depends on just what, where and how much the "tossed" items cost.
Mark the one thought to be good as good and really toss the other so it can't mess you up later if you saved it for any reason,

Since you plan on taking the sensors out anyway, I would start with the trans, this is the most common one. I know you said you have no equipment do you at least have a AC/DC multimeter, you can check these sensors with a one. Though it has been my experience that the trans sensors go first in the mopars.

VSS for the speedo is on the transmission. It is a hall effect sensor which creates a square wave digital signal. A volt meter is too slow to see the upper and lower voltage points of the waveform unless you turn the drive shaft extremely slow otherwise the meter will average out the voltage.
The sensor is powered by an 8 volt power supply from the PCM (orange) and ground though the PCM(Black/Light Blue). The signal output (White/Orange) is shared by the PCM and the speedometer. If the sensor wasn't producing a signal, you should have a VSS trouble code 15 and a check engine light.
The speed sensor in the rear end is used by the ABS system only.

Question folks. Does either speed sensor have more to do with cruise control than the other? Cause remember its not working either

The logic of the cruise control system is part of the PCM. Once again the PCM uses the VSS signal as one of the inputs for controlling the cruise control servo.
You need to check for trouble codes.
