1995 Toyota Avalon engine heat problem Sign In

Hi everybody!
I have recently bought a 1995 Toyota Avalon which has done approx. 218000km (approx. 120000 miles I believe). I didn't pick up any problems while I was test-driving it, and by the sounds of it it has been regularly serviced, though I don't have any proof on paper. The day after I bought it I did a lot of driving in stop-start traffic and hot weather, and after an hour and a half or so we noticed that there was white/grey smoke coming from the engine! The temperature gauge at this point was a little under half way, as I would have expected it to be if it was running well, but the engine felt and smelt very hot, and obviously smoke is not something to be disregarded. Also the radiator wasn't running. I let it cool off for a few hours, and it was fine again, and since then I have had the vents running at the hottest temperature and on full if I've been driving for more than five minutes, to take the heat off the engine and prevent a similar thing happening. I have been trying to figure out the problem - the reason that the car over-heated is obviously because the radiator isn't turning on, because I haven't seen it run once, even though the engine gets rather hot at times.I've checked the top and bottom radiator hoses for temperature and after fifteen minutes running (with the vents on hot) the top hose is hot and the bottom hose is cold, so this also means the radiator isn't doing its job as far as I know. The thing that puzzles me the most is that the temperature gauge shows cold when the engine is cold, and then when it has been driven for a bit it goes up to just under halfway, but it never goes higher than that even though the engine is obviously getting very hot. My thoughts are that it is the thermostat or the thermoswitch, but I also doubt that it's the thermostat because of the temperature gauge acting weird and I doubt that it's the thermoswitch because the temperature gauge still moves, it just doesn't move all the way to where I would expect.

Any suggestions?!?!

It's usally best to start your own thread to get the most response.

I guess this one slipped thru the cracks but it sounds like the radiator cooling fans weren't coming on in the original post. What this would do would cause an overheat condition at idle and low speeds. If this is the problem you're have then the 1st thing to do would be to verify if the fans are coming on when it gets hot............
