Hello. I went to start my Jeep this morning, and when I turned the key, all lights, door alarm ,etc activated, but the engine did not crank. All I heard was a whirring sound. The headlights are bright when activated, so I don't think it's the battery. My guess would be the starter or the solenoid, but I wanted to get confirmation if I could. I did just have the alternator replaced a couple of weeks ago, and haven't had any issues until this morning. Thank you.

Hard to express the exact sound but if this sounds like starter is turning well (whirring, humming etc) and not engaging the gears to turn the motor than the "starter drive" may have failed. Sometimes they will do that intermittently at first. That starter drive is supposed to throw itself at the larger gear and get the heck out of the way when you let go of the key. That's what it seems like so far. If there's an issue with the larger gear, AKA "flywheel or ring gear" I find that less common but on the maybe list, T
