My girlfriend's dad is having trouble with his van and I can't seem to figure out anything yet. Last week, they had trouble with it not starting (Although I wasn't there to mess with it the first time). Her dad's friend tried everything he could think of. They replaced the belt, plugs, and plug wires... and also a new muffler but that shouldn't have anything to do with it. It ran good for about 2 days and now won't start and for some odd reason the headlights and interior lights won't work now. The engine will turn over just fine but never will even almost start.

I talked to the Chevy service dept. at a dealer and they said there is an inline fuse on the alternator and 1 or 2 on the starter that control the ignition and also some of the lighting(headlights and dashlights). He told me that the fuse is basically a copper wire that will burn out but the plastic insulation will Not melt. I can't even get to anything far enough to even know which wire to try.... but I can't seem to find anything that feels like the wire melted inside the insulation. He told me they pull on the wire and it will usually fall apart if it's that.

I then got to thinking maybe it's fuel related... I checked to see that it's firing, and it is. So I thought maybe a clogged fuel filter. He said he had the fuel pump replaced in September too... But even a fuel filter wouldn't explain the headlights not working. So... please help!!!!!

If it is that inline fuseable link, where in the world do I find it?? And how can I possibly Get to it better to check it out. I don't have a repair manual for it so it's hard for me to guess.

Please help!

From your description, the problem is almost certainly electrical. In addition to the fusible links on the starter, some vans had some located on the firewall near the battery. If you find a burned one, fusible link wire is available at parts stores. Look for a power distribution box and check its fuses, if it has one.

go to your local parts store (the owner of the van) and pick up the haynes manual for this van. to save money, check it out at the library. then photocopy the info you need for reference when the book is due back. this will take stress off with a manual in ahnd.

suggestion: dont let anyone change more parts before getting this nice, handy, all purpose item...the manual.Smile

Was just wondering if this problem was ever figured out or not. I have the same problem going on with my 94 ASTRO. was driving it on the freeway and it just stalled. Cranks over great, but not start. NO HEADLIGHTS and NO HORN..... Very weird. Going to check fusible links but was hoping that someone knew just which one to check first.....

a friend of mine had this problem, wasn't sure if you figured this out took me about 6 hours, but it's in the firewall, behind the battery where the power goes into the fuse box, the clip has somewhat melted.....
Good luck...

Same problem with mine. Where is the wire behind the firewall inside the cab or does the firewall need to be removed?

You guys need to stop posting to a 4 year old thread and start a new question if you have one.

I'm going to lock this one now.
