I have a 94 chevy silverado stepside with the 4.3L vortech. It started acting funny a month or two ago, it would randomly die while idling or when getting on it. After it dies, it wont crank for about 10 minutes, then when it cranks u have too stay on the gas too keep it running. I changed the fuel filter, ran good for 2 days and started again, changed fuel pump, ran good for a week and is doing it again. Im stumped, i have people saying its sensors, relays, timing, idk what to think. it dies the most when you let off the gas to come to a stop sign, i just need her running right again so I can get to work.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.
Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.
These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.
1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.
2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.
3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.
4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.
Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

the plugs and wires ar fairly new (3 months?) my older bro also pointed out something, in a streak of dumbness, i cut my muffler off and ran straights, it wasnt but a month after that the problems started, he said it could be the wrong amount of backpressure on my heads or something? I know nothing about this stuff, so i sound like an idiot.

If you crank the truck will it stay running at idle if it is in park/neutral and only shut off at idle when it's in drive/reverse?

sort of, half the time it will crank and idle funny, and when i put it in gear it dies, then sometimes it will drive okay and when i let off at a stop sign or something it will die, then it wont start again.
