1994 Mazda Protege - Doesn't Start...Sometimes Sign In

Hello All! How's it going? I have a 1994 Mazda Protege that, at random times, won't start. It doesn't make the sound like it's trying to turn over nor is there a clicking sound when I turn the key. The first time it happened I thought it was the battery or the battery connectors but after replacing them it still does it. In the past 2 months it's only happened about 6 times. Some people have said it's the starter but I really have no clue what it is. I do know that the battery is fine, the connectors are good and tight, and the battery cables look ok. The lights, radio, etc. all works fine but when I turn the key to crank the car nothing happens. It will eventually crank though after it sits awhile (sometimes overnight). Then it'll just crank like normal.

One time when it done it I was stranded at the local grocery store and some guy come over and offered to help, I told him what it was doing and he, too, said it was the starter. He took a tire iron and bumped my starter with it and it cranked right up. Then I got home and it done it again. After that I had my uncle (an intermediate mechanic) check it out and he said he didn't see any loose connections or anything.

So the next time it happened I started moving the battery connectors and cables around then I tried cranking it, nothing. Then I tried cranking it in neutral and it cranked right up. But the last time it happened (2 nights ago) nothing worked, but then yesterday it cranked right up. So I'm figuring I need to replace the starter but my grandfather (who doesn't know much more than me about cars) insists it isn't the starter but either the cable that runs to the starter or the ignition switch. So what do you guys think?

If rapping the starter with a heavy object got it to crank after it was totally dead, that indicates there is a dead spot on the starter. The starter needs to be replaced
