1994 Lumina stops running when driving help me please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sign In

I have a 1994 Chevrolet Lumina 3.1L 6 cylinder and my issue is that when or should I say if I get it to start it will start most times but can be difficult but the problem is that once it gets started it will idle just fine in park but once you go to drive especially when the car warms up it will die when you make a turn or stop when it dies I can smell gas and also when it wont start well the gas smell is strong I tried replacing the throttle position sensor and found a few wires unplugged I plugged them back in but none of that has helped it did get a little easier to start but the other issue is still there please help. Also something to note this car was a repo bout at a junk yard it ran great at first anyway when they got it it would not start with key because the people that had it before had removed something so they put a push button start in it could this have a link to the problem it ran good for over a month but then developed this issue

Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

well I don't have a way to test it but I can hear the fuel pump kick on and if I take a spark plug out it is wet with fuel I took the fuel filter off and checked it and could blow threw it and a lot of dirt and gray gas came out at first then it was clear and ran a little better but still has the original problem I have to be honest I am not much of a mechanic

I was told about the ignition control module and wondered if that could have something to do with this problem

I also think I may have a leak in the water pump but the car is not over heating and is not loosing a lot of water

None of what you have done has proven anything.

Here is the complete set of tests to isolate the cause of the no start. If you are not able or not equipped to perform these tests, then your only choice is to tow it to a shop for diagnosis.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

It dosen't seem to have a problem starting anymore that was my error in putting that in the post but the main issue is that it shuts down when driving but doesn't seem to have the issue until the engine is warmed up the water leak is a new symptom but doesn't over heat this is a puzzle to me as to why it only shuts down when the engine is warmed but it will sit and idle just fine it seems to be when you stop then hit the accelerator that is shuts down

I believe what Hammer Time is trying to say is that if you want to figure this problem out yourself then you're going to have to get some of the proper tools and equipment to figure out what the problem is. The first thing you have to do is get a fuel pressure guage and test the fuel pressure. If you're aren't willing to start at this step then you have to take it to a shop. Let's say you get a fuel pressure guage and the fuel pressure is fine. Well, you just ruled out a fuel pressure issue and then the mechanics here will be able to tell you what to try next. Even if it will now starts a lack of fuel pressure could still be the cause of it stalling. But, it may not be the problem.

I'm not a mechanic but have been working on my own cars since I turned 16 and got my first car. When I was in high school luckily anytime I needed to work on my car I could just use the school auto mech shop. When I was in the Marine Corps they had a shop on base where you could rent out a bay for $5 a day and they had free loaner tools that you could check out when needed. When I got out of the Marine Corps I didn't have anywhere to go to rent tools although Auto Zone does have a tool loaner program. You just have to put a deposit down that matches the actual cost of the tool. When you bring the tool back you get a full refund. Since I work on my own cars I purchase tools as I need them. Over the years I have spent a lot of money on tools but I have saved a ton compared to if I took my vehicles to a shop. Plus I now have a lot of tools that are needed to work on vehicles.

What I'm getting at is that if you're going to work on your own vehicles you're going to have to spend some money on some tools or rent the tools needed to diagnose the problem. You could buy a fuel pressure guage and your fuel pressure may read fine but at least you have the guage for next time. If you buy one it's still going to be cheaper than taking your car somewhere and having a shop test the pressure. You just have to be willing to spend a little money if you want to figure out what's going on with your car. If you're not willing to spend money on tools or spend the money to take it to a reputable shop to get it fixed then you'll end up spending quite a bit more guessing and checking with new parts.

The mechanics on this forum are A+ mechanics. What they tell people is exactly what they would do to figure out the problem themselves. So, if they tell you to get a fuel pressure guage and check for fuel pressure, then you need to figure out a way to get a fuel pressure guage and test the fuel pressure. If the fuel pressure ends up being fine and they tell you to test the injectors with a noid light then you need to get a noid light and check for injector pulse. By the time you do figure out what the issue is it may not be a fuel issue at all and you may end up spending a bit more on tools this time around to figure out what the problem is but next time you have an issue you'll already have the tool and they may end up saving you a bunch of money. It's just something you're going have to be willing to do if you want to continue working on your own vehicles and if you want to narrow down the problem without swapping out a bunch of parts. Cars nowadays are very complex and you have to have the correct tools to track down the problem. Purchasing the correct tools may or may not save you money this time around but eventually it will save you a ton of money. You'll also learn a lot about diagnosing problems.

So, since you're at square one, get a fuel pressure guage, post your findings on your thread and go from there. If it turns out it's not a fuel issue then that can be ruled out and you can move on to the next step of diagnosing the problem.

Nice effort Marinegrunt but I don't think he's going to be able to do any of that with any confidence of accuracy.

OK I have tested the fuel system and spark the fuel pressure was 47psi and the spark works the compression is good I also replaced the fuel filter and water pump. The actual problem seems to be that the car for some reason is getting too much fuel and dieing so what could cause that?

If that were really true, the car would be running.
