1994 GMC Jimmy SLT 4.3L 153K Starting problem Sign In

Granddaughter's Jimmy died at an intersection. She said it was just like she had turned off the key and would not restart. Brought it home on my trailer. Thought the alternator might have drained the battery, but had it tested and it was okay. Battery was bad and I replaced it. Car will restart and run smoothly, but other times it will try to start and then it will make a loud "clunk", sort of like the motor is kicking back or the starter is seizing and then will not turn over anymore, no clicks or anything. Tried rocking it back and forth in gear when it does that with no luck. Can't get to the solenoid to tap on it and it looks like the starter may be pretty difficult to remove, so I thought I would check here first.

That's a Vortec and they have had a lot of leaking injector problems that leak into the cylinders and can cause hydro lock on fuel. They have also had issues with the Crank sensors causing kickbacks. I would put a fuel pressure gauge and see if the rest pressure leaks down.

Thanks for the reply. That sounds like what it might be. I'll have a friend test that.

You can also remove the intake manifold tuning valve from the top of the plenum and look down inside the intake at the injector and fuel lines that are prone to cracking to look for leaks. The crank case may be full of gas, so make sure you change the oil after your repair if you find that is the problem.

I'll do that this week. She said her gas mileage has dropped recently and she thought she might have a fuel leak somewhere because of a strong gas smell, but no apparent signs of leakage.

Pull out the dipstick. I bet its got a strong smell of gas, which confirms what Hammer and DS are pointing you towards.
