I recently bought a 1994 Ford Escort for cheap on craigslist(yes, bad choice) and had my mechanic put in an engine from a junkyard which he tuned up. It is an automatic 1.9L From the time that I have been driving it, it has occasionally been misfiring, but it hasn't really affected its drive-ability, so we haven't done much about it. When the hot days of summer came along, the car started having some more problems. On my way home from work, which is about a 30 minute drive, it would slowly start accelerating weaker, and idling weak. It sounds like the car is choking to death or something, then it eventually stalls. It will start back up if you wait 5 minutes or so, but won't last very long. Eventually one of these times that it stalled, it never started back up, even after days of sitting. We determined from our friend that the solenoid was bad, so we replaced the starter and solenoid. This allowed the car to start right up, but after another 30 minute drive in mid day heat, it stalled, which isnt a surprise because we know that the starter doesn't have much to do with that. I am pretty sure it is not over heating because I had a car that overheated previously and you could tell it was overheating when you popped the hood. A major concern that may have caused problems in the engine was that the terrible mechanic we were using told us to put a new air filter on it...however he did not mention that he gave it back with NO air filter. We ran it for about 3-4 WEEKS with no air filter. This is a TON of information, so if you need any more details to help, just ask. We are desperate to find a fix, as we are driving our truck 45 miles a day and it gets 10 miles a gallon. Any input is greatly appreciated

do a compression test to see if this motor was wrecked. If it is within spec then test fuel pressure. If that checks out in the proper range. Test for spark with an inline spark tester and injector pulse with a noid light (both are cheap tools). Post back with the results of these tests and we can go from there to see what is the problem here.

In addition to checking what Nick posted, also take a look at you idle air control valve and crank sensor. It sounds like your engine is staying in closed loop or your computer is dumping fuel in the engine because the wrong/no information is being relayed. It probably wouldn't be bad to test all your sensors since it was a junk motor. My truck did this and I was finally able to narrow it down to the crack sensor after some initial heartache. Hope I could help.
