1992 gmc van won't start

I have a 1992 GMC Vandura 1500..Motor size 5.7v8.Today I went to have the alternater checked,The guy hooked up the machineto test the alternater he told me to rev up the motor,then he said to turn on the headlights,after that everything died,the lights wouldn't come and there was no power at all.He said before we turned the lights on the battery was putting out good.On the way there we heard a frying sound,is there a wire that could have burned causing us to lose all power or can it just be the alternater? Any suggestions??He also tried to boost the van and it wouldn't do anything.

It's possible you popped a fusible link, there are some down at the starter. If that is all good then just grab a test light and start at the battery and see where you are losing power....
