Was the repair just the make your own inside or whole cable and casing? Pain to go back to dash end but sitting still with needle nose pliers you shouldn't be able to turn the cable as it would lock into trans gear. It might not have mated in well or at all, especially with the kit fix if too short it's near impossible to stretch effectively.
