1992 Subarau Legacy - Shift stick came off the base. (We can drive & shift with the base stub). I can't determine how the stick is designed to stay attached. I've been able to apply heavy downward pressure while slowly twisting the stick. (It will not just slip back on).
After a couple of 360 twists it seems back in place but within a week or two it comes off again.
Adhesive? How's the thing supposed to be secured?

I don't recall ever working on that exact setup and will state the obvious that something has broke in the plastic. You said you could twist it back on & it would be good for a bit....

Since I can't see it, a temporary fix that may work would be to put a hose clamp around the base once you get it back on. that may put enough pressure on it to hold it.....The other option would be to try to find a new handle but with the year of the car that may be a little tough

Here's a better description. What comes off is the whole stick: knob at the top, dust cover boot about 2/3 down, and the bottom of the stick is metal both outside and in the inner surface. The botom of the stick is a female end.
What remains is a stub - probably metal with a thick rubber type sheath - about 3". It is bolted to the linkage.
I see no mechanical way of fastening it; can't use clamp because the clamp would be attemping to compress around
the metal stick. It does go on with great difficulty. You can't just press on it. The rubber makes for a tight friction fit. If it would just come off as difficultly as it goes on. So, to get it on, I press down hard with a twist motion and get about an 1/8th turn; and keep repeating; it appears to be fully seated after about 2 360's. But... doesn't last long. I can't imagine that this hasn't happened to someone or..... why is it always me.
thanks for your reply. Dwight

Yea I think I see what you are talking about now.....It's all metal right up to the handle (ball) and it's an internal connection...

That does make it a little tougher to rig something up... I'm drawin a blank at the moment......Maybe someone else will have brainstorm & jump in...
