1992 Hyundai Elantra 1.6l - no spark at plugs

Hi, I have a 1992 Hyundai Elantra 1.6 four cylinder with manual trans. It has close to 200,000 miles and still ran strong. There isn't any spark at plugs. I have a shop manual and tried to test the coil and power transistor off of the car. They both tested good. The book, which is vague, tells you that if the power transistor tests good and you still don't get any spark, to replace the transistor. New power transistors are hard to find and are around $200. I bought two used transistors that came from running engines but they did not work either. Can anyone help me, please? Thank you

No I did not check the timing belt because it was replaced less than 15,000 miles ago and when the problem started, it was intermittent. It would run for a short time and then quit. Over and over until it finally stopped getting any spark. I have checked the compression and it was good. I could be wrong but all the symptoms did not indicate that the belt had slipped a tooth. Thank you,

I just wanted you to make sure it wasn't broken or stripped..... If possible pull the codes to see if there isn't any help there...... Get a test light and check all the fuses.... Then check post #4 in this thread......... HT has a good chart to put you on the right track...... http://autoforums.carjunky.com/...shaft_sensor_P70633/

Sadly, code reading is impossible where I live. Closest dealer is 125 miles away and no one else has the reader (car built before 1996). I am positive that the problem is ignition (no spark at plugs) Is there any manual way that I can test the coil, power transistor, and crank angle sensor to see which one of these units may have failed? Does anyone have one of these scanners for sale? Thanks again!

Don't be so sure of yourself. You still need to test the other functions or you could be throwing of good money away changing unnecessary parts. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

O.K., I checked the compression and the fuel system. Both are good. Still no spark at the plugs. How do I check if the power transistor, coil or cam angle sensor are bad (since these regulate the spark)? Thank you

Sorry that it takes me so long to reply-- my car is outside and it has been raining for a week. I checked for juice at the injectors. With my amp meter on dc m.a., I get current while cranking the engine. With just the key on and no cranking there is a very slight current on one side of the injector terminal. I am assuming that this means that the injectors are working and that fuel delivery is not the problem. I still don't have any spark to the plugs. Any other suggestions? Thank you, again, for all of your help.

No, it does not mean that. As i stated before, you need to use a noid light bulb to test that.

O.k., got a noid light set. Tested it while cranking...no light! What does that indicate, what do I check next? Thanks again

Obviously I'm not there so I can't tell you anything for sure but your symptoms are pointing toward a bad Crankshaft Position sensor.

Is there any way to test the crank angle sensor?

Yes, but it requires a portable lab scope to see the wave pattern.

Could I remove it and take it somewhere (dealer) to have checked? I just checked for the price of a new sensor and was told this part was almost impossible to get and that the price range was in the $700.00 range. Unless I get lucky and find one on ebay or you have any other ideas for me, the car will be parted and junked. Too bad! This car really drove nice.

I would just take the car to a reputable shop and let them diagnose it. It really can't be tested off the car.
