1991 plymouth acclaim

my 1991 plym acclaim starts, then won't go over 20 mph. I turn off the motor, wait, then it starts right up then won't go over 20. Also temp gauge goes higher than before. Any suggestions? Thanks

When was it last tuned up as in filters, plugs and wires?
There are so many things that can cause this, low fuel pressure, weak ignition coil, restricted exhaust that without seeing this car or you willing to dive in and start doing some testing, let alone collecting equipment to do the tests; all we’re going to be doing is guessing.
Maybe what you could do is take the car into a shop and have them give you their opinion as to what the problem is. You don’t have to authorize the work right away, check back with us and we’ll see if it’s feasible what they are proposing. Yes you may have to pay them for their diagnosis but it might be cheaper then guessing.
