1991 Chevy S-10 2WD, 4.3 V-6 - Hesitation/Loss of power & warm engine dies at start-up Sign In

104,000 miles. Engine loses power for a brief period (3-4 seconds) between 25-30 mph consistently. This happens when engine is cold or hot - doesn't matter. Transmission seems to shift smoothly, as usual. Second, when engine has been warmed up and driven a while then turned off for, say, 30-45 mins, upon start-up the engine will die. I restart it and it will die again. Happens with A/C on or off. I have to restart and push accelerator to try and keep it running and it will sputter and carry on until it clears itself up and runs smoothly. Recently tuned up (plugs, wires, fuel filter), new coolant temp sensor and I just replaced the EGR valve yesterday, but same issues. Original MAP sensor in place (I could not get it off bracket to try and clean it - didn't want to force it) and I assume original TPS and fuel pressure regulator. I think the fuel pump was replaced within last 6-7 years, but unsure if fuel pressure regulator was changed at that time. Please help. I need both issues resolved before I go nuts!!

What is the 8th digit of the VIN#?

That is a TBI system. I suggest you get a fuel pressure gauge and necessary adapters to monitor the fuel pressure when this happens. The pressure has to remain within 9 to 13 PSI at all times.

Thank you for responding. Any chance it could be the fuel pressure regulator possibly? I do not know about these things. Will have mechanic check it out. Also, back to original post: What is likely causing the engine to die at start up after it has been driven and warmed up? For example, whenever I drive to Wal-Mart and have been there about a half hour or longer then go back and start it up it sometimes struggles to run then chokes out and stalls. I have to restart and press accelerator to keep it running while the engine struggles to run. If i let off the accelerator it usually stalls again. This happens with A/C on or off - dowsn't matter and I usually notice it more on hot or warm days. I once had a 1993 Buick Regal Custom V-6 3.1 that did the axact same thing. Please help with that problem if you can. Thank you.

Until someone tests the fuel pressure, all I have is this.

I wonder if that crystal ball is using an incandescent bulb or a CFL bulb?
