1991 Buick Skylark, 2.5, 168,000 Mi. : Car runs strong. After driving on freeway at higher speeds, 50-70mph, for half hour or so, the car will not restart immediately when stopped. Battery OK - lights & radio come on. No cranking or engine turning whatsoever when key turns. No engine sound. It must sit for a while. Starts an hour or two later. Used to wait 20 or 30 minutes to restart. Now it takes longer. No problem of restarting usually when driving around town on errands. Problem has gone from intermittent to every time on freeway. Started occurring occasionally 3 months ago. Yikes.

So, this is a no crank? or the starter doesn't operate?

Using a volt meter or 12 volt test lamp you'll probably have to go down to the starter and check to see if your getting power to the solenoid on the purple wire with the ignition in the start position. Test this when the starter doesn't want to crank. You can also try tapping on the starter motor, to see if you have brush contact issues while someone is holding the ignition in the start position. If the starter takes off when you tap on it, the starter needs replaced.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

You would find it doing as DS just said - probably the first, no or almost most power makes it to starter.

1991! Fine - but GM side post battery terminals can't be original on this unless you assertively remove, clean and grease them up. High chance those just loose contact right at battery somehow with the longer drive aggravates them?
If no or little for tools right now, not a fix but a check. See if you can by hand turn the cable with it just like it is. You shouldn't be able to and don't wait on it. It also might start right up if doing that or never start again without at least new quality cable ends, best if in question whole new cables. If not the problem and those have not been tended to along all these years they will be the problem sometime and more than once if not watched,
