My family has a 1991 Buick Century with 259,264 miles on it, and an engine size of 3.3. It had been in the shop for at least three months- the problem was that it refused to start up after we would drive to destinations. We would have to let it sit for awhile before we could start it and leave our destination. It would give a slow cranking noise, and all the lights on the dash would light up. Then, if we tried to crank again, those lights would light up, but no cranking sounds.

So now we have it from the shop (the mechanic tuned it up and put coils in it - He said the valves had conceded because the car sat up so long), and after driving it around, the battery dies. We have to keep charging it up. The battery is about a year old.

What would cause the battery to keep dying like that, and would a new battery solve the problem?

The coils would have nothing to do with the battery going dead. You need to have both your battery and charging system tested.

Thanks for your help, Hammer Time. We had the battery tested, and one of the cells were dead. We were able to get a new one. Hopefully that's all that is needed.

Didn't you test the charging system?

I agree 100% that the alternator output, starter draw, parasitic draw along with voltage drop tests across the cables, all should be performed. An issue with any of these will leave you stuck again and or damaging the new battery.

That's a new one I haven't heard. What exactly does that mean?
