I have a 1990 Mazda 626 automatic. When the engine is running and the car is stopped or parked--idling-- the engine revs up and down on its own incessantly. The effect is very unnerving. The car has a tachometer where I can read the engine's RPM. It looks and sounds as if someone is pumping the accelerator pedal deliberately (though this is not the case). Worse than that I fear this will cause the car's engine to completely die out.
What is causing this problem? Is there some sensor or switch that can be replaced to alleviate this condition? I don't have any money to take the car to a mechanic.
I would really appreciate any advice or help.
Thank you in advance.

The cheap and easy things are to check the vacuum and wiring connections underhood and the integrity of the air cleaner assembly. I think there is a connection that needs to be remove to just check or replace an air filter that has once caused me trouble on a similar model.

I think I was able to fix that one with the plastic wire ties to hold it tight as it didn't want to stay connected well.

It's worth checking out and let us know if it didn't we'll go from there, T

Hey Tom,
Thanks for answering my post. I will inspect the air cleaner assembly as you suggested. But as far as the ''vacuum'' and ''wiring'' connections go, I have no idea where those things are.
Is there some website or weblink that has detailed diagrams of car's parts?
I'll write again to let you know how it went.

If you want a complete car manual should be found at AllData.com a sponsor here and you can get a free sample which is all I've done and I was impressed. It does cost -- I think $24.95US and expires in a year.

I have no interterest in them but it sounds very comprehensive. If you try that have all the vehicle's info ready including VIN and the date it was made which you can find if still there on usually driver's door jam, T
