1990 Chev p/u possible a/c prob Sign In

Ok, now I'm on a roll and I have another question. My 1990 Chev p/u has a 350 motor and is making a strange squealing sound. It's not a belt but I think it's the A/C compressor. The A/C has not worked for a couple of years and now that cold weather is here I've noticed it has a strange squeal that varies with engine rpm. I don't notice it when I'm going down the road, just when idling. Can the compressor be going bad even though it is not running. Will I have to replace the compressor?

Your compressor is both a compressor and an idler bearing for the belt. If compressor even tries which it would with defrost request and you could and should just unplug it till you may want to fix the whole system up.

You can just replace the bearing in the clutch or many times just buy the belt for a non A/C applicaction and bypass it. If you don't want to fix A/C there are specially made pulleys to elimate the comressor if wanted. Hit back if that's needed and I'll try to find out who has them, T

The compressor is not trying to kick on. I think it is too low on freon for that. The bearing sounds like what the problem is. How hard is it to replace the bearing and can I get the part at most any discount parts store. I don't think that's something I can find in a Chiltons manual.

OK: that bearing is toast. The bearing may be less than $20 but tricky to replace. It could be peened in or a snap ring and I wouldn't know without looking.

If you can handle used parts you could just get a whole new (used) compressor or check out the bypass belt or bypass parts. That bearing is in the clutch head and really just a pulley.

I'm at a few dedicated A/C sites but if you need to purchase something on the web I'd like you to do that here.

May not be possible and I'm not sure. Hit me at home as I don't feel comfortable stating other sites for the world to see.
