1990 Camry A distributor costs HOW much? WTF Sign In

The other day my car stalled on me while driving on the freeway. A few days earlier I get off work car running fine....get home, go back out about an hour later to get a pizza and the car wont start. I tried several times, its turning but not starting. In the morning the car starts fine again. And is running well. I take it to get new wires, spark plugs and a distributor cap. Plus a flex pipe for the exhaust. ( I hadn't gotten a tune up on the car since I purchased it in Sept and felt it might have something to do with car not starting.) 3 days later the car stalls on me while driving on the freeway. I get it towed to the repair shop. This evening they tell me I need a new distributor that cost $438. Total cost to fix is $639 with labor and diagnostic. I feel this price is ridiculous!!! I have a 1990 toyota camry with 115,000 miles on it. I would like to know if I should get a used distributor (junkyard) or new one at Autozone for $129-$250. I have also heard that the coil in the distributor goes bad often in these cars and cost about $100 for a new toyota coil. I am a female and my gut feeling is that this repair shop is pulling a fast one on me. Can anyone guide me on what to do?

There are a few things we need to know 1st. Is the shops dist new or rebuilt? There is a big difference in price on those. The AZ one is more than likely a reman and low quality at that.
Keep in mind a shop is like any other business and does mark up the parts they sell.....No one sells their product for what they pay for it.....They wouldn't be able to stay in business.

Once you know this you and call around and get a better idea of what you are getting & how good the quote is.

Yes if the coil is bad it alone can be changed but for warranty purposes some shops don't like doing piece work. If another part was to fail in the dist within a short period of time, its always goes bad for the shop. There is no real good way out for them where they aren't going to lose money and possibly the customers confidence as well....

I have to agree with Sidom; you have to compare apples to apples.
I looked up this distributor at my supplier and the cost of a remanufactured is about the same price that you found at AZ; but it does not come with an ignition module.
The price that the shop quoted you probably is a new distributor; complete with all the electrics. My supplier’s suggested list price for a new; is a bit better then $500.00; but I’m in Canada and for some reason, we always seem to pay 15-20% more for parts.
