1990 Blazer won't start. Sign In

Hello, I have a 1990 Chevy Blazer S-10, 4.3L, I'm not sure of the mileage, as it's not parked at my house, somewhere in the 180-190k range I think. It was running just fine, other than needing some new spark plugs, as it did have a miss. One day it was running fine, we stopped & got out to go somewhere, then wouldn't start back when we got back in. It was acting like it was out of gas (it was low at the time, and parked on an incline), so I got some gas & put in it, no luck. So we listened for the fuel pump to kick on when you turn the key on, no noise was heard, so I replaced the fuel pump thinking that was the problem, and still, nothing. I appreciate all the help you can give, I'll try any test you say to try.

Thanks so much!

You probably just wasted the time and money for the fuel pump. Does is get power? Relay, fuse OK?

I'm afraid you're right about the pump. It does get power, the radio still comes on, so it's not that far dead. Hubby said he thinks the relay is ok, he said something about the windshield wipers also being on the same type of relay, and he swapped them, and the wipers still came on.

If no fuel pressure then either the pump isn't getting any power or ground. It just primes till engine is running. Connections can be the issue at the pump and wiring to it,

No power to the pump is what we were thinking. Question is, how do we tackle it at this point?

If relay has power when it should I would chase the wires all the way for a break where it stops. Said already I think there have been many that a stupid connector corroded or failed in newer GM products that this posted here and witnessed but as retired and was always low volume none came my way in a career of this headache - smile.

If you find power at the relay and know it works the likely problem in underside and you can very small pin prick a wire (patch the pin hole with liquid electrical tape) and see where it stops. Start by eye for a trouble spot and that pricking wire thing should be at a minimum. Interior not so bad but exposed even tiny hole will become a problem later.

No software for diagrams but color of wire should stay the same along the way.

Good luck. This type of thing can be a real cause of hair loss!

To add to that: A simple scratch awl type test light and sharpen it on a grinding wheel is what I do. If wanted Walmart has them for about $5 bucks, LED and if needed use just a ground direct from battery with jumper cables,

Great stuff HT. If that doesn't do it not much is going to - but sending it out will,

If you aren't familar with wiring diagrams, the tan wire is the one for the fuel pump. It should be a 4 wire connector but this diagram is only showing power & no the ground wires.....

Thanks guys! It may be a couple days before hubby can look at it. What stinks is that when it quit on us, we had it towed to our mechanic's garage, then he went out of town before he could look at it. We just found out this morning that he has decided not to return, so the garage is without a mechanic, and there sits our truck, among junk cars. Now I have to get them to tow it to my dad's (which is stone throwing distance) so hubby can start trying to see what he can do himself. It may be a while, but I'll stay in touch about the progress. I appreciate all the advice & the diagram, that will be very helpful, I'm sure!
