I have a 1989 Mercury Tracer 5 door hatchback, 1.6L engine, with 148.5 thousand miles on it. Just got it from a family member, it's been sitting out in their yard for a year now, so it definitely has some fixing up to do. Originally, supposedly my uncle took it to a mechanic because he thought he heard a rattling in the back and both he and the mechanic agreed it was the bearing on the axle in the rear left. However, after actually cleaning out the car, I found a lead fishing weight in rear left of the car next to the spare, and now there's no rattle there. However, what is worrying is that there's this sound of friction, I'm not sure how else to explain it, coming from the front right of the car. Sounds like the front right wheel. I jacked up the car, and the front right wheel doesn't seem to be as loose as it should be, and also, when jacked up and the car is on and in first, the left wheel will spin fine, but the right one attempts to spin but stutters while doing it (at a slower rate than the left wheel as well). The brakes were replaced right before the car was ditched, so I thought they might be too tight, but the wheel still does it even with the brake pad entirely removed.

There IS a broken muffler as well, but it doesn't sound at all like it's coming from any of the exhaust system, it really sounds like the front right wheel, and it is obviously having a problem. Any ideas on this? And, while I know that sure, my uncle supposedly took it to a mechanic (he's been notorious in the past for not taking cars in), there is absolutely no sound that I can hear from the back, if there WAS a bearing problem, I should be able to hear something, correct? So should I be able to save some money and not have to take it into a mechanic?

Thanks in advance.

Without being there it's tough to guess.
Normally with a bad bearing you would hear it while driving. You have to realize that you are also turning an axle as well as just the wheel & the R axle is longer than the left...

So from here, I don't know if you have a problem or not...

This is where you may want a mechanic to listen to it & check it out.... There is no subsitute for an experienced ear & eye, even the internet doesn't cut it sometimes....

One other suggestion..........

uhhhhh.... you may want to take this one in yourself and thank the uncle anyway for offering but maybe next time....Sly (that cracked me up)
