1989 Mercury Cougar LS Bizarre Electrical Issue Sign In

I have a 1989 Mercury Cougar LS that seems to be having an unusual electrical issue.

Every time I step on the brakes my windshield wipers go from intermittent to low continuous. They'll keep moving for a little bit but then go back to intermittent. To add to the confusion this only happens if my headlights are on. I've replaced my turn signal switch but that hasn't helped the problem and have no idea what else to try.

Edited so I don't bump: The problem has become intermittent after I checked the grounds so I'm thinking something came loose and I put it back in place. I'm going to try tightening some things and that should fix it.

I'd start by checking wires/grounds under the dash area. Does it have anything aftermarket wired into the factory wiring?

I'll check the wires. It does have an aftermarket stereo and speakers but they've been in the car for four years with no issues.

Samz is probably on the right track. Also check the body grounds in the engine bay. You could even do a voltage drop test at the wiper motor connector ground circuit back to the negative post of the battery to confirm if you have a ground problem or not.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
