1988 Formula Firebird wiper Problem

My Firebirds windshield wipers will not work unless I turn on and hold the water spray toggle (yes I know I suck at car terms). The toggle for the water is a knob at the end of the blinker toggle and when I turn on the water they move and spray just fine, but as soon as I let go of the toggle the wipers will stop and stay right where they are. If anyone has any ideas i would greatly appreciate it.
