I have a 1987 Mercury Grand Marquis (Its a 5.0 liter engine) and something very odd happens. Sometimes if I try starting it, it will start up but it will idle extremely high (to the point where you can't drive it) and then when I go to turn it off, (I'm not sure what its called exaclly) but the belts infront of the engine still rotate, the engine is off, but those keep going. This is with the key OUT of the ignition. After about about a minute of those belts rotating, it drains the battery and dies out killing my battery. Someone said it was a bad starter, so I replaced that, then someone said I might have an old battery, so I replaced that. Someone said to replace the siolinoid (SP?) but my friend said that was working fine.

I'm more than a little confused about this one. It's virtually impossible for belts to keep turning with an engine that is truly OFF, or does it just crank away by starter until it kills the battery and a starter won't put up with that much cranking if that's what's happening.

If normal the ignition will shut off fuel and spark will quit too.

Does this car have some type of aftermarket fan that is belt driven (never have seen one).

We can work on the idle speed after we figure this out. T

I own a '87 Gand maquis 2-door. I replaced the starter soelnoid when i bought it ($200, driving), with one from my old maquis, and just the other day i had the same problem, starter kept running after the key went to "run". I turned it off, starter kept running, and popped the hood to give the starter soelnoid and it stoped. I replaced the starter soelnoid with a new one and its been fine since.
