1982
Chevrolet
suburban
5.7L
104,000 miles

Car was running fine until some one (not me) hooked the battery up backwards and smoke came out of the engine compartment just about the amount you would exhale from 1 drag of a cig, but i dont know where it came from more specifically because i wasnt at the front of the car. After the battery was hooked up backward the taillights do not work however the headlights still do. When the ignition is turned absolutely nothing happens no sounds so clicks nothing. What could the problem be?

You probably melted a couple of fusible links. That is special fuse wire that melts when overloaded. They are down at the starter. Pull on each wire except the purple one and if any stretch, they are melted and need to be replaced. DO NOT use regular wire, fuse wire only.
