It will be driving smooth as butter then all of a sudden (sometimes triggered by a bump or some such, but sometimes just comes and goes for no reason I can tell) the front right wheel starts making a relatively loud grinding/scraping sound. My first guess was bearrings, but it seems like if the bearrings were worn it would be happening always... Any ideas?? Thanks!

Possibly a broken brake return spring (I’m assuming that it still has drum brakes being a 69 bug) that is floating around inside the drum. You should be getting it check ASAP; if it is a broken spring it could jam and lock the wheel without any further warning.

As Dan Said: Brake parts likely. Jack it up and spin the wheel. Just remember you need an Allan wrench to take off a drum and the left side will be reverse threaded. Let us know what you find, T

Thanks for the help. The noise seems to happen in spite of when I press or don't press the brakes. It could still be break parts??

I did jack it up and spin it and it seemed to spin ok, but didn't have an allan wrench at the time to get much further...I'll take further look today. Think installing a brake spring hardware kit might likely take care of it?

Thanks again...I'm actually selling this bus in a month and want to make sure it's safe for the girls who are buying it.

You have to look and report back. Folks here are good but we can't see it or hear it so we rely on YOU for that.

It's good of you to take care of this especially when it's known and you are selling it and that is the right thing to do. The VWs back when had some funky brakes and some were hard to get at. We are here to help as best we can but don't rule out a shop to help you out, T
