07 PT Cruiser problem with pumping gas into tank Sign In

2007 PT Cruiser
62,000 miles
I am able to pump gas fine in warm weather, but when the temperature drops under 40 degrees it will allow me to pump 1 to 1 1/2 gallons and pump will shut off. I struggled with this problem beginning mid winter last year and was surprised when it fixed itself in spring.
Sensor? I have tried nothing to fix it at this point.
Thank you.

Re: 07 PT Cruiser problem with pumping gas into tank Sign In

There are a few things that can cause that.

Restriction in the filler pipe
Restricted filler vent
Most common is the EVAP vent valve sticking closed or the hose pinched off.

Sometimes when people remove the tank for a fuel pump or something like that they will pinch the vent hose against the body when putting it back up.

? Other: The cool or cold switch>
Is this stored for longer times or a "Sunday" driver use type car now?
Just asking as assorted fuel* types seriously don't like being much over a month old! Water is possible but shows mostly a lot colder than the 32F mark to outdoor vehicles fast or with some time. Duh, would require REALLY being below the water freeze point.

Once more common still is last two weeks where I am. Ethanol alone may prevent most freezing or burn thru water with regular use. It goes bad fast will separate water out of the petroleum parts be low in lines stops the show.

Some fuel filters will stop "water" some don't.

Today's solution know that there are over 200 formulations of fuel varies season by season place by place too. Stabil helps not the cure. Alcohol (know the types - many) help or cause the problems!

Solution for a fun low use car like this is use it more or seek out "equipment fuel" now and stabilize that a change allowing things to go weeks if so is whether to keep full or run lower use less products to the fuel so it works. Rock and hard place.

It's a maybe just saying "below 40F" it's a lot colder under this car where it sat and for how long doing this.

Just some food for thought so you can prevent and hopefully not go thru this seasonally will be unique to what you use for fuel*
* = Good luck, not a single search will tell me exactly what's in junk sold just note that none of the places call it "gasoline" rather just fuel!

Re: 07 PT Cruiser problem with pumping gas into tank Sign In

It is my wife's daily driver so has not sat with old fuel. I am looking for a pinched line, but am unsure of how this will be affected by the outside temps. Dealer says this has been seen before and gas tank will need to be replaced at about $900. Not putting that kind of $$ into it. Just looking for a way around it.
Thanks again!

NOTE:
This bulletin applies to all vehicles equipped with a gasoline engine.

DISCUSSION:

Customer may report that the vehicle is hard to fill with fuel or that the fuel pump nozzle shuts off repeatedly while trying to fill vehicle.

This customer complaint can occur due to a number of different causes. The fuel tank is the least likely cause of this condition. The following Diagnostic procedure can be used to diagnose the issues.

DIAGNOSIS:

1.Is the vehicle a LX/LE/LC/L2?

a. Yes >> proceed to Step # 2

b. No >> proceed to Step # 4

2.Idle the vehicle 60 to 90 seconds upon stopping.

3.Does tank refill properly?

a. No >> proceed to Step # 4

b. Yes >> Inform the customer to idle the vehicle for 60 to 90 seconds upon stopping if vehicle was driven aggressively. This is due to the fact that on the LX/LE/LC/L2 the fuel tank is a unique saddle tank design and needs 30 to 60 seconds while the engine is running to level the fuel in both half's of the fuel tank. Allowing the vehicle to idle for this amount of time will let the fuel pump transfer fuel to the left side tank, opening the control valve and allowing normal fuel filling.

4.Disconnect the vapor recirculation tube at the fuel tank.

5.Attempt to refill fuel tank.

6.Does tank refill properly?

a. Yes >> Proceed to Step # 7

b. No >> Proceed to Step # 11.

7.Reconnect the vapor recirculation tube at the fuel tank.

8.Disconnect the other end of the vapor recirculation tube at the fuel filler tube.

9.Attempt to refill fuel tank.

10.Does tank refill properly?

a. Yes >> Replace fuel filler tube.

b. No >> Replace the vapor recirculation tube.

11.Disconnect the control valve to EVAP canister tube at the fuel tank.

12.Reconnect the vapor recirculation tube at the fuel tank.

13.Does tank refill properly?

a. No >> Replace Fuel Tank.

b. Yes >> Proceed to

14.Reconnect the control valve to EVAP canister tube at the fuel tank.

15.Disconnect the control valve to EVAP canister tube at the EVAP canister.

16.Attempt to refill fuel tank.

17.Does tank refill properly?

a. Yes >> Blockage is in the EVAP Canister, or ESIM, or Clean air hose (ESIM vent hose), or filter. Diagnose appropriately.

b. No >> Replace the control valve to EVAP canister tube.
