06 Golf mk5 1.4S rear caliper problem after reset Sign In

Hi All I would really appreciate some advice on the following problem:

06
Volkswagen
Golf m5k
1.4
50000 A couple of months ago someone did my rear brakes for me but didn't have the caliper reset too so remove the caliper and pushed then back in. Surprisingly this worked. However, the brakes must have been binding on as the pads are shot after just 2 months. So, I've just started to replace them again myself. I bought the calpier reset tool and managed to get the piston to retract so I could fit the pads. I did however notice that I must have slightly nicked the rubber thing (dust boot?) that folds up as you crack the piston in. I noticed that after this happened the piston seemed to wind in a lot easier.

My first question is does this affect the piston working other than keeping dust and dirt out?

Anyway, I decided that I'd put it back together and crack on with the job and when I got everything back together the brakes aren't right. The pedal goes all the way down even after pumping in 30-40 times and the piston is moving back out. The handbrake lever pulls all the way up now and also doesn't engage the piston. At no point has any brake fluid leaked so I can't imagine it could be that.

Is there something I've missed as part of the calpier reset? Does anyone have any ideas? I know some might say the piston is shot if it wasn't done right but how would it have been working to have killed the first set of pads if that was the case?

That dust boot is not just for dust but keeps moisture out or outright water which would ruin the caliper. Strongly suggest replacing both and new pads on both not just one at a time with brakes,

Thanks for the reply Tom. I've got the full set of pads to do both sides but stopped when I hit this problem until I know what it is. I know I can get a piston repair tool to replace the dust boot I was just curious if this tear could be part of the problem with the piston not pushing back out as if it's not and I need to replace the whole caliper or something else then I don't want to waste time on the repair kit if that makes sense.

Yes you can buy kits to redo caliper but frequently they cost so little already done it's not worth it. I fully admit to being very weak with the Euro cars but rear discs generally do calipers one of two ways.

1. They should just be pushed back CAREFULLY letting fluid out at bleeder making the room for new pads. That type means the parking brake is NOT part of the caliper but generally a small drum type hidden inside the rotor itself or............

2. The piston screws back in to make room and caliper does have the parking brake as part of it.

If the second type and you just wailed on the piston you may have broken it. How to fix or how much it hurt what if so I can't say is why I suggested ready to go rebuilt ones. It's not really right to do one side and not the other with brakes. Don't forget rotors for ages now frequently don't give much extra metal to have them turned so new on those and if you turn (machine) them they are much more apt to warp. In the trade we don't like a ticked off customer and risk doing it all over again a couple thousand miles later and who should pay for that?

If you do nothing to the rotor you really risk wrecking the job and will quite likely be doing it all over again. If it was something like a farm vehicle that never saw a road do anything you want to cut corners but I won't suggest that here and doubt any others would either.

Too much risk if they fail on you out there. Do it right, do it once and they will last longer too,

Tom, this is an electronic caliper. The pistons are drawn back with a computer. It's probably already ruined.

I could be completely wrong but I don't think it's electronic as I can't see any wires running to it but maybe they're hidden in some way. I've just had it all apart again, put the rewind tool in place and cranked it back a half turn as if to wind it back out and it seems to have released and everything has tightened back down as I would have expected with a few pumps of the pedal. Solid when brakes and hand brake on and free when they're not. The down side is I need to strip it all down again and replace the dust boot so it doesn't spoil the piston altogether.

I'll get some new disks and the piston repair kit and tidy it all up and get the other side done also before I'm back on the road with it though...

Tom may have been right. We don't have this car in the states and I thought it was one of the new ones that retract electronically.

He was right with the second option. Handbrake lever is part of the piston. It certainly gave me something else to look at so thanks to you both for the replies, much appreciated!!!!!
