Was driving yesterday, all of a sudden I hear a pop and my car starts losing a little power, however it still runs, but started making this noise? Was thinking timing belt but the car shouldn’t start if it was the timing belt. Any insight? 2005 Hyundai Tucson, 147,000 miles 2.7 engine

Here’s a video of the engine running https://imgur.com/gallery/OjDuN18

We don't use crystal balls here. You ask about a noise and give us a video with no sound.

Upper right of the video frame. Guess mute is default on that site?.

Sorry dude, I have nothing.

A ten second check reveals that there is only one belt on this engine (hey, nothing would surprise me anymore, and my old Goldwing did have two) - so it's not broken.

By blown spark plug .. if you mean insulator blown out of the threaded section, or (like certain Fords) the plug out of the head? Not harsh enough IMO. That'll be more bang-bang-bang.

But can't pin the noise either. One of those things that an ear over the engine bay rather than a mic at distance is better able to discern.

Certainly sounds like something moving rather than (say) a loose heat shield rattling away. Serpentine idler? .. dunno. Doesn't sound squeally enough. Good old cardboard paper towel tube to the ear and a bit more trying to zero in? Likewise something solid to the ear against the block (screwdriver) will tend to zero in on internal engine noises.

That does sound like it could be a blown out spark plug.

Why don't you just take the cover off and look.
