I recently purchased an 04 Taurus with a 3.0 liter V6. The car had been "sitting up" for almost a year due to a bad transmission. I purchased the vehicle and replaced the transmission and it ran great for 30-40 miles. It began to run low in fuel and added approximately 5 gallons and drove another few miles before parking it for the night. The next day when I started the engine it would barely idle and would not accelerate. Once the engine warms it runs somewhat better but still has no power. Could this problem be related to the gas that sat in the tank for almost a year? This did not occur until the tank was almost empty. The OX sensors read lean on one and rich on another. When the engine is running the smell of old gas is very evident.

Randy; The very first thing would be to get that old fuel out of there and replace the fuel filter. Never allow the fuel tank level to get to 1/8 tank. The fuel pumps on fuel injected cars are in the fuel tank and depend on the surrounding fuel to keep them cool. Running a tank low can burn up a pump. Many times, I've found restricted/plugged fuel filters causing a lean condition. Let's start there.

I removed all of the old gas and replaced with over a half tank of new fuel. I also replaced the fuel filter and the front three spark plugs. The car runs much better but is still far from where it should be. I pulled the codes and were given 2 codes relating to OX sensors, one reading too rich the other too lean. I also got a code referring to the IAD sensor. The car will now power down the road but still will not idle and there is some valve rattle and spark knock. What can I try next. Will the OX sensors cause these problems

I'm guessing the next step would be to finish putting the rest of the spark plugs in.........Sly Wink

No, that's too hard. It should run better with 3
