04 Taurus - Starter spins but will not engage Sign In

I recently had the transmission replaced in my 04 Taurus. Today I go to start the car and the starter spins but will not engage the transmission. I first thought the starter was not properly tightened when the transmission was replaced but when I reach down and grab the solenoid it seems tight. What would be the next logical reason for this problem and the solution. Replace starter and or soleniod?

My first guess would be that they put the wrong flywheel in it.

The starter has since engaged and the engine has started. However the engine runs rough and will not idle. You can gain only so many rpms before it begins to bog down. Could any of these problems be realated to a sensor or possibly the crankcase position sensor specifically. I cannot help but feel that all of these problems are related in someway. The work done by the mechanic who installed the transmission was overall very poor. Many bolts were not tightened and the exhaust system was not put back in the hangers. I am concerned that this may in someway be related to something he did improperly.

Well it's always a tough call without being able to see the car. With any major work done there is always the possibility of some other system getting damage. Also these same systems can fail thru no fault of the tech, it's just the nature of the beast. While the poor workmanship isn't the "smoking gun" condemning the tech, it isn't a good sign and does tip the scales slightly.....

1st thing to do would be to take it back to the shop, tell him the problems you are having and nicely ask him if he could take a look at it. If he's on the up & up and it was something he caused, he should take care of it. If he looks at it and says it was nothing he did, have another shop diag the problem for you. If this was caused by a tranny R&R, it should be pretty obvious if it was tech error or not once the problem is found and then you could go from there.

Thanks, I guess I got a bad feeling about this tech when I unexpectedly showed up at the shop and he was using my car to boost off another vehicle. It was later determined my alternator had suddenly gone bad and I had to replace it. I will always wonder if the alternator problem was caused by not connecting the cables properly.

Yea......That's not good. Once again it's in that area that it's very possible, depends on if your car was running or not.

A good rule of thumb if you are going to give anyone a boost is to leave your car off, then you're pretty safe. With the car running, all systems are functioning and you now have another system tied into with a dead battery. Once the dead car starts you can get a voltage spike that ends in your vehile and if it's running it can reek havoc with the electrical systems. If the car is off, the battery absorbs the spike and it pretty much ends there...

That is the exact reason I don't use customers cars for anything....testing, jumping, cruising thru the drive thru, nothing. If something goes wrong with the car thru no fault of yours, now questions are raised (with good reason) and you could possibly lose a good customer over it....
