To start the car is a 2004 Pt cruiser Limited edition 2.4 5 speed. 200k miles. I was driving down the road and all the sudden the car shut off. Still had power to radio etc but the starter wouldn’t even try. After hauling it to a friends and days of diagnostics in a last ditch effort he took a hammer and tapped on the gas tank and bumped the wires running to the fuel pump. All the sudden it started. You know it’s going to start because if the key is in on position you can hear the fuel pump kick on. So he wiggled the wires and it would go on and off. No fuese are blown, the battery is okay. I can’t for the life of me solve it. The strange part is when this happens the starter won’t try. No fuel pump, no starter. Any ideas? Thank you.

Your technique indicates a bad fuel pump or connection but would have nothing to do with the starter not cranking the engine over.

It is strange. Is there something involved with the fuel pump that won’t let me start the car? As in not even trying to send voltage to the starter?

No, the fuel pump will not prevent the starter from engaging.

Out of box thinking, usual for me.
Starter is a huge load. Fuel pumps less but a load.
Battery thought to be OK and might be.

If cables from that (both) are not known good the show is over the fat lady is singing.

Cables? Both ends any loss seen or unseen would cause this.

Not maybe but when (18 year old car) were they last cleaned - both ends? Never - I read minds, that's the issue here or must be ruled out,

Tom
