'02 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.1 belt tensioner not lining up

serpentine belt broke, replaced. noticed that original tensioner didn't match up, thought it was bad, replaced. same problem with new one. all pulleys line up, tensioner is the odd man out.  am I missing a spacer?

Strange. There is an AC Delco tensioner and a Gates tensioner for a 4 door that looks like it is thicker.
Gates p/n 38353:
Compare your new tensioner to your old one, might not be the right one.

Looks to me like your harmonic balancer may be migrating out.

NO! You replace those not fix them! There's vulanized rubber between metal that can fail. Know that if that falls off there's no telling what damage could happen too,

By your pics for the exact car looks like you have room - it requires a puller rent-able if you want to do it yourself. Some (can't know all) you can get at thru a wheel well if too tight - dunno for sure on this exact one. Good luck - bet if you take a hard look you can verify that is in fact the problem,
