My '02 Ford Escape v6 was hit on drivers side last year (front and rear light assembly and door damage) basically a bad fender bender. It ran great still but looked pretty bad. It sat for almost 1 year, in September i drove it an hour and a half to have body work done on it. It ran great then too.
I picked up the car yesterday and it ran like crap. After 10 min of driving it started smoking. (the main ground wire in front left side melted & was smoking) ground from motor to frame. I checked all the connecting wires i could find. I wish i knew more about cars, but can a wiring prob make the car run this bad? It now sounds like the motors blown, I know it cant be a blown engine! I replaced the spark plugs, replaced a fatigued vacuum line.. Cleaned and tightened everything. Ran a little better but has a horrible knocking sound now, goes from having power to no power?? It just runs really bad now. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated!Thank you, Dione

Your above quote indicates and issue with the charging circuit, most likely as a result of the body work that was done done. This matter needs to be brought to the attention of the body shop, since the car ran fine before you took it to them, and ran poorly after you picked it up from them. They did something or damaged something that they have to make good on.

I dont know what a charging poblem would have to do with a knock in the engine . but I would go back to the body shop and talk to them about the way it runs . TIP :They will say "nothing to do with their work"

Well of course the body shop says it has nothing to do with them.. BTW thank you for your response.
I'm at a loss. I cleaned all the contact on all the ground wires. Checked the pos cable from the battery to the starter and to the alternator.
Had a mechanic come out today & said the motors blown.. because its knocking. I dont think he heard a word i said about it running fine last month. And the ground wire was smoking. (But honestly my being a woman doesnt help in situations like this). I was hoping for an ingenious idea that would actually fix the problem..

Does anyone know how i would go about checking the oil pressure? There is no gauge for oil pressure. i checked the dipstick, then started the car -thinking if the oil pump was working the level would have to change when running. There was absolutely no change at all in the oil level. I may be wasting my time ? Any words of wisdom?

If you have severe noises coming from inside the engine, you're past looking for an electrical problem. The only mechanic that has actually heard the noise says it's a blown engine. You have no idea what the noise is but you are sure that it's not a blown motor. It might be time for you to face reality.

Thats why i was thinking it could be the oil pump?? Engines dont just blow up from sitting right? Either theres no oil where there should be oil or it over heats and cracks something? The oil light never came on.. the temp never got above 220.. maybe the wiring problem fried something in the dash?

Engines are like light bulbs . THey work fine for a long time . Then one day you turn the switch and pop , its blown . Yes engines can be running fine for a long time and then you go to start and valve breaks, or a main or connecting rod bearing spins , or timing chain jumps time . These and many other things can happen with perfectlly good oil pressure.A heavy rythmic knock is generally associated with a rod bearing or wrist pin (holds the piston unto the rod). You can try a test that willl sometimes give you a clue . Remove one plug wire ,start eng . stop eng replace wire. repeat for each cylinder . If the noise changes or even goes away ,then you do have an enternal problem and that cyl is the affected one . It's time for a mechanic.

It really doesn't matter what the cause was. You have already driven it to total destruction.

Problem solved:
*pos cable from battery to starter had bad connection & smoked the ground wire.
Positive wire to Alternator was fried - but car was still starting and stayed running.
New cables and new alternator and computer reset . Now its running fine with no knocks!
Also replaced coil packs and plugs.
Now it runs like a champ!
Thank you for info - 2 cylinders werent firing!
Thank you, Dione
