Hello, all!
As is typical for me,I've got a unique problem.
'01 Chevy Tahoe, 175,000 miles. Beginning of this summer the idle degraded slightly. The problem increases on hot days. In addition, when temp is above 90 a ratcheting sound emits from engine compartment on drivers side. When idling, I can noticeably degrade idle when turning on the AC.
I took it to my very reliable local shop and they gave it a tune up. The problem persists. Hot days increase the problem to the point that turning the fan on (with or without AC), causes a significant stress on the motor and the ratcheting sound happens intermittently. I just got back from my local shop, and while they can detect the mildly rough idle their computer shows nothing. I live on the coast and hot days are few and far between this time of year. I'm planning on a long road trip and need this fixed.

Any ideas?

You've said some clues with that. A/C shouldn't really be able to lower idle if that's what you meant? Hot and a stronger load from compressor that's about to "grenade" is a slang for giving out/burn up could though.
IDK, common engine was a 5.3 you didn't say had a small belt just for compressor I think? That was lower passenger's side but noises travel.
You probably should disable it so it can't engage but stay there in place. Pull plug to it or I think a two wire switch is low pressure cut out just disconnect not if three wire! If you don't know don't.
I think you can cut the one belt and save the grief of it al l being worse but are a pest to replace that I recall if wrong.
Just not using A/C isn't enough if can kick on anyway for defog/defrost and some just periodic exercise IDK just why when all off?

Whole point is/was you said it noticeable lowered idle and it really shouldn't so a clue of the reason, T

With that many miles it's probably time to do a compression test on all cylinders.
