01 Durango Power Steering issues

2001 Dodge Durango with a 4.7 engine, 4wd.
I was experiencing a clickiing noise when turning right and
now my steering is very tight or stiff at low speed, like manuvering
in parking lots or at home.
At crusing speeds it seems to be better, but I am guesing that is because the
vehicle is moving faster giving a false impression.
I just replaced the P/S speed sensor and that did not correct the problem.
Is this a faulty pump? or could this be a different issue.
Fluid is at normal levels when checked as well
Also, I have looked around for a replacement pump and the O/E part that dodge gives
does not specify a shaft size (17 or 18mm).
every part store or shop is asking or quoting different prices based on the shaft size.
Dodge only sells new and at twice the price plus of a remanufactured pump,
but I cant very well buy two pumps. How do I determine what size the shaft is, or can I??
ALSO, if is safe to drive if the pump is faulty until replacement or should it be parked??

The best way is to simply measure it. Brake rotor calipers would work well for doing that.
Make sure you flush out that P/S system thoroughly before running a new pump on there

Thanks for the info.
Is it safe to assume (even though I know I shouldn't) that the root problem
is in fact the power steering pump that is faulty and needs to be replaced or
could there be another problem that I am missing?
There is about 111,000 miles on the vehicle currently.

Uwm; Does the steering get easier as the engine warms? No, you shouldn't 'assume' anything. Granted, the pump is the most likely culprit, but could be the steering gear. Since you will need to flush the system regardless, you may want to have this done, first. You could get lucky. A pressure check is the only way I know to properly diagnose.

No, It reacted the same after i drove it home as it did when I left work.
I think I will go that route and have a shop flush the entire system and pressure check it
for me. If it is then the pump that is bad I will replace that myself. I would much rather
have someone flush the system for me than risk getting that wrong.
I can always replace the pump myself after the other stuff has been done if that
does end up as the culprit.

Yes, it most likely is the pump. There are many other things that can act that way.
