Hi there,

So I have a Mazda protege 1.6L engine Year 2000.

I am getting the fault code: PO402 Catalytic converter faulty- Bank 1

Does this automatically mean my Cat is broken?

What is bank 1?

How do I know it ain't the 02 sensors?

There aren't any leaks I just put a sleeve on the front exhaust, new plugs.

Some welding was done on the front pipe near the Cat.

Please help Thank You.

Do you mean P0420?

It is a 4 cylinder so it has only 1 bank on that engine. If you have any other codes, the engine is running bad (misfiring), engine burns oil or coolant, it has exhaust leaks, and/or there are technical service bulletins related to the P0420 that haven't been addressed, you need to address those first before condemning the catalyst.

Thank You for the reply,

That is the only code, and note that it appears intermittently.

Further suggestions?

You know I have a spare 02 sensor, I think I will put that in and see if that clears the code.

BUT

What are the definitive signs/symptoms that it is the cat converter? as opposed to the 02 sensors?

Without scan tool data, emission gas analyzer test results, and some O2 response wave forms, your just throwing parts at it. Also like a mentioned if the engine isn't running right, you have exhaust leaks, or the engine is burning coolant or oil, your wasting your time diagnosing a catalyst code.
