95 Ford Escort Wagon Muffler Rumbling Sign In

I have a used 95 Ford Escort Wagon, 155K, (1.6L engine maybe?). In the last 2-3 weeks, it has started making a really loud vibrating/rumbling noise in the rear right side of the car. At first it sounded like a loose screw was vibrating, or as if someone had put a golfball in my muffler and it was bouncing around. Now it is getting louder and more frequent.

It usually only happens when my car is in "drive" and I apply the brakes, when I am reversing out of a parking spot, or I am driving 20km/h or less. There is no problem when I am driving at high speeds on the highway. Only when I pull up to a stop light. It is so loud and embarrassing, and I have started putting my car into neutral or park at stop lights to make the noise go away. It seems to be related to the brakes somehow. Do you think this is a muffler problem, or something else? Will I be damaging my car by continuing with my "switch to neutral" technique? Thanks!

From what you are describing, it does sound like the muffler/tail pipe is what's causing the noise. But, to be safe, you should get it up on a lift and take a look. If it's rattling that bad, the engine is surely running rough? Could be as simple as a tail pipe or muffler hanger has broken. Good luck.
