The original cracked and I replaced it with a dorman from rock auto. That one cracked and I read somewhere that those were defective but they had fixed the problem so I bought another one. Lasted awhile but cracked again. What is making the manifold crack? This car has 312,000 miles and runs well. I've had it since 1998 and maintained it at regular intervals.

! 312K - wow.
OK, This is to say the first lasted over 300K and now two replacements have "cracked" again and again - right?

Is this cracking in the same spot on the manifold? If so it may be getting too hot there or just torque on engine perhaps weak motor mounts are putting too much force on it?

IMO think you should rule out weak mounts first and look where it cracks for clues of possible excessive heat right there vs other areas of it,

Do you have a splash shield missing from below allowing cold water to splash on the hot manifold?

Doesn't surprise me. It's a Toyota.

That stuff is all over the sides of the roads and IMO only chance is to routinely paint up nuts, bolts or spot welds on the whole area. I haven't been finding this stuff new separately or looking in the wrong places. Most want whole new OE parts that would come with it,

You know I've had this car for so long I can't remember if it had a shield. I think it had a small one, unlike my 2010 Honda Accord has one that covers the whole engine bay.

It makes a lot of sense. The manifold cracks in the same place, right in front where you can see it through the slots in the heat shield.

Would some kind of ignition problem cause this and how could I check?

I'll look around the interwebs and see if I can find the shield or the junk yard.

Thanks for the clues so far and any further advice. :)

Yes, a misfiring engine will cause the manifold to overheat but the sudden cooling will hasten the crack.
