water accidentally put where oil goes- is there hope for this engine Sign In

i know very little about cars. i had my oil changed the other day and asked them to put water in my car and they said they were not allowed to do that. so my mother in law said she would do it. oh no she says...i have ruined your car...ooooops. she put a gallon of water where the oil goes and then i started the car for a few seconds when she realized what she had done. i then turned the car off. is there hope for my car now? is there anything that can be done to save my car? help please. ford escape. any help would very much be appreciated. thanks in advance.

Need to drain the oil/water and change the oil filter. It may need multiple oil changes to rid the crankcase of moisture. Also keep the mother in law away from your vehicle.

If you look in your owners manual, it describes where the fluids go. The only things that would need water is the washer reservoir and the coolant reservoir. Normally people use washer fluid in the washer reservoir and a mixture of antifreeze and water in the coolant reservoir. Might be a good idea to have your mechanic point out how to check your fluids, which fluids to use, and where they go.

Have it towed to the shop. Do not start the engine again until the oil is drained and replaced.

Often if you put the words "owner's manual" and the make, year and model of your car in Google you can likely find a file containing the manual online.
