snapped hose in engine - name? cost? diy? Sign In

2000 Pontiac grand prix se 3.1L

My car was overheating and not really going when I pressed on the gas. It stalled a few times while driving.

I put in coolant and that didn't solve the problem. I stopped driving it. Looked in the engine and there's a snapped hose. I taped this hose back together and tried it and all problems were fixed! The tape won't hold though and I want a proper fix.

This may be a vacuum hose from what I read. Anyways the part that snapped is at the connection. The hard white tube inside snapped in half (it can't be more than a quarter inch od).

Can I just buy a new white tube and tape at the connection? Do I need a new piece where it connects at? What's the name of these parts and is it a diy type job?

Here's a picture of the snapped hose:

And here's a picture of where it connects to:

Thanks,
Scott

I tried to insert the pic into the thread but it's way too large.

You have a broken, what looks like a Purge valve.

Re: snapped hose in engine - name? cost? diy? Sign In

Thanks for the reply. Is that what the hose connects to? I looked up a purge valve and it doesn't really look like what's in my car. It's broken at the connection but really it's the hose that's broken (unless the connection can't be fixed without buying a new purge valve).

No, the nipple is broken off the valve and still inside the hose.

It sure looks like a purge valve to me

Thank you. I have a "street mechanic" friend. Would he be capable of replacing this or is it preferable to take it to a shop? Like everyone, I'm tight on funds but could save up if need be.

I don't know what the definition of a "street machine friend" is but if he can't do this, he needs to turn in his vise grips.

It's down to replacing the part and hose as needed and the tools. Almost doesn't matter if this was a car or not just the tools to do it and know when to stop if it's too much for some reason,

Just making sure this is the correct part to fix my problem.

link deleted second one on the page.

Out of curiosity, what is the function of the broken hose?

Yes, it looks right but I'm deleting your link because they are not allowed here.

That valve is designed to burn gas fumes from the charcoal filter. One line is engine vacuum to the engine and the other line goes to the charcoal canister. The electric solenoid joins them at the proper time.

Re: snapped hose in engine - name? cost? diy? Sign In

Apologies for breaking the rules. From reading it sounds like this fix should improve my gas mileage? Makes sense since it has been going steadily downhill. Things don't crack off like that out of the blue. It must've been cracked before it snapped.

Thanks for your help. Does this site have a donation button? If so I would gladly throw a couple bucks in there. Not much but maybe it could help with the server bill or buy yourself a beer.

If not, please accept my sincerest gratitude!

Re: snapped hose in engine - name? cost? diy? Sign In

scottdot: Not sure if this is dealer only parts or not. I'll let you check on that. Know this - it needs it or they wouldn't have put it on there and has to work with correct parts. The hose needs to be intact and good plus fuel tolerant so just any that fits isn't going to work out.

If you can take the parts you need with you to get new ones. May have to wait a day or two and plain IDK how popular they are but dealer parts look ups should show at their parts counter just what each is, how fast they can get it/them, price and so on. So expect possible time without use of the car so plan for that if your friend can't know what the fastest way and place to get parts from is around you.

NAPA tends to carry more of the would be "dealer only" parts for some of this stuff if one in your area. Anyone want to save a buck if they can but seems you need this right and soon so suggest in person brick and mortar places so there's less chance of a mistake unless there's a wild price difference,

Re: snapped hose in engine - name? cost? diy? Sign In

Could anyone show me a diagram or a video for how to hook this up on my car? The guy I got has never dealt with a purge valve and the part is different from the one in my car.. it's not an exact copy (I recon it's made to fit several models of cars?)

We just need some visuals.

Re: snapped hose in engine - name? cost? diy? Sign In

No........... If it doesn't match the original, it is the wrong part. Don't use it.

There are no instructions to replace something that simple. It's held on by one bolt, one wire plug and 2 hoses.

Re: snapped hose in engine - name? cost? diy? Sign In

Well, I asked up there if it was the right part, and I was told yes. Also, when I Google for my car purge valve, this is the part that comes up everywhere. a 2000 Pontiac grand prix se 3.1L.

Here's the new part next to the old part.

Re: snapped hose in engine - name? cost? diy? Sign In

No, that is definitely the wrong part. The lines aren't even in the correct position.

I just looked it up at one of my suppliers and it showed the correct one

It is Borg Warner part # CP515
The original OEM number is 1997297

Re: snapped hose in engine - name? cost? diy? Sign In

I don't see how an evap purge valve or even a line broken off the valve would cause overheating, loss of power and stalling.

Maybe you should have the coolant system pressure tested, so you don't overheat it again.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Re: snapped hose in engine - name? cost? diy? Sign In

Nobody said this was going to fix any of that but it still needs to be fixed. The vacuum leak could have something to do with the stalling but not the overheating.
