oil leaking on hot engine - smell getting into passenger compartment

1996 Geo prism - 180k miles- 2L - 4 cylinder I'm from NYC - didn't use a car there. I moved to Ohio so forgive my lack of knowledge and correct terminology. This car is my beater - I only use it occasionally. I have a 2003 Hyundai Sonata that I do I use all the time - its in the shop for a brake job. The Prism has always run great - I check everything monthly and there's no reason to get rid of it but its slowly falling apart so I really don't want to put any $ into it anymore. I will put $ into the Sonata which has 120k miles and will start needing replacement parts or so I've been told. The problem withn the Prism is it needs a valve cap on the oil cap - my mechanic told me (I trust him - have done business with him for 7 years - no problems) It will cost $150 - Again, I don't want to spend the $ but after I drive it for over 20 mins. the engine heats up and the oil leaks and the burnt oil smell starts to get into the passenger compartment. Its not terrible or otherwise I would fix it now but enough that I'm in the forum. A guy told me I could do a short term cheap fix by going to a self serve car wash and wash/spray down that area (avoiding the spark plugs / battery) and it would help the smell but not eliminate it. Is that a bad idea? Any other ideas? Thanks! Don't pick on me because I don't know squat about cars since I lived in New York City for 20 years and people get there around by subway and taxis - I appreciate it... Dee

That's a real good way to destroy a couple thousand worth of electronics. Never wash your engine. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

he means that any little bit of moisture gets to those sensors they ruined, and the cost of all those sensors and computers and electronic parts add up quik if you get them wet and short them out.. when i have alot of oil on a manifold or something like that ill wipe it down with a wet rag and use about 100psi of air and a blow gun will rip the oil right off. make sure you have something to cover your face you will get covered with whatever you got on your engine. ill blow my whole engine compartment out 2-3+ times a week living on these dirt roads.

good points-its a bad idea - Thanks I don't have access to an air gun (maybe you could suggest where I might) but what type of fluid or solution could I buy at an Auto zone and wipe off as much leaked oil as I can to lessen the oil that is being heated on the engine and then putting out that smell? I know I could wipe off some but isn't there something that would take off the rest or that I could do regularly on the new leaks off the valve cap?

Just stop the leak and the residue will burn off on it's own.
