engine diagnosis Sign In

I am having a problem with the engine in my 1984 c30 motor home. It is a 350 (5.7 liter. To start I put new plugs, wires, cap and rotor. When I was putting the wires on I had to put the wires on 90 degrees off. It is missing at low engine rpm, lags pulling a hill and backfires when I turn it off. I set the timing and it is holding rock steady. I have guessed that the distributor was taken out and put back in 90 degrees off. When I am going down the road it runs just fine. In stop and go traffic it gets worse with the missing and lack of power. It has chevy's hei ignition, I think, sorry it's been a long time since I have been around something this old. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem will be a big help.

Well, if you know the distributor is in wrong, it would be logical to install it correctly and then install the cap and wires correctly.
