I am a teacher at a local High School in my area and I know a great deal about cars but i have a big problem with my daughter's 1996 Ford Contour. The transmission has had problems for a while and i just had it replaced completely under warenty from the transmission company. when i got the car back I changed the timing belt.

the car was running smoothly and my wife and i test drove it to make sure it was safe for my dauther to drive again. the next day she got in the car to go to work and the car wouldnt crank. The engine would roll over but wouldnt quite hit to completely crank. i then took the car to a ford dealership wondering if they could run a diagnostic on it and find the problem that way. well, they couldnt tell me anything.

i was wondering if any of y'all would know wha the problem may be from past experences ect.

thank you
Bruce

If I had just replaced a cam belt and now it won't run, the first thing I'd do is re-check the belt. Cam timing is tricky and requires a special tool installed at the rear of the cams. (An 18mm Snap-On wrench works pretty good, though.Cool )

I ‘m sorry but I find it hard to believe that a Ford dealership cannot tell you what is wrong with this car, unless you are not willing to pay for their diagnostics.
Again sorry but you’re going to have to give me a lot more information before you even begin to sound creditable.
Dan.

the crankshaft position sensor was bad and we replaced that and now the car runs. my son works at a ford dealership so it wasnt necissarly the cost of the diagnostics, but that the sensor was bad and was not producing a code.

thank you for your concern and your belief in my problem. i found the problem by accident and repositioned the cap on the sensor and replaced that because the car would not run, still. the car now runs perfictly. thank you for your help. contours are a little funky at times.
