i have a 2000 taurus it clicks once then nothing i have lights i shut it off now wont start

If the engine doesn't crank, have the battery tested and make sure your battery connections are clean and tight.

Usually a very low battery or poor connections with a single click. Lights and pre-sets may reset from attempt to crank.
Lighting alone doesn't take much juice vs the starter motor by far the most draw on the battery. Check battery when charged up by charger and charging system. Clean cables just because most folks never do. Both ends of both battery cables,

They melt numbers or codes on the battery to denote date of manufacturing and such.
You still need to have the battery tested and make sure your battery connections are clean and tight.

A quick check you can do is get a hammer & gently rap on the starter body a few times while someone trys to start it.....If it cranks over then more than likely you have a bad starter.......
Just use all due care & caution while doing this......keep in mind this may get the engine to crank over so make sure you are in a good spot & not in the way of any moving parts....
After that, it's time to roll up your sleeves & go to work.....

No click n ow? Starter looks like this with solenoid on top..........
The top connection SHOULD be direct to battery and a small wire triggers it to both throw the drive out and turn the starter motor itself. If those connections (both large with larger nut) aren't good it wouldn't turn but might click. No clicking now at all you should be testing that power is getting to the thing if only a test light for now. Bet is becoming needs starter not so cheap to be wrong so testing is worth it,

A bad connection is a bad connection even when they look good. If battery can do anything it should be at least clicking which is the sound you would hear from the solenoid which is on top of starter with the wiring.
Was busy so missed some of what the others said in this and stepping on each other with replies. So, the top should light a test light all the time. The bottom should light a test light when a helper perhaps turns the key to "start" with the key. If not then you test the smaller trigger wire not shown but has to be there that it lights with key turned to start. If so and nothing goes on to the lower nut and stud the solenoid isn't behaving. Wasn't sold separately in the place I found the picture.
Small or under rated battery is still a possible problem but you are getting nothing if I read that so there's a problem. Starter could get power and not turn but would still hear the click,

Sorry - a bit distracted while typing away.
OK - Top of starter is the solenoid and direct power same as battery power. When triggered by solenoid which that type does dual duty meaning it sends the full power available to the larger motor AND throw the drive gear out at the same time to turn/crank engine.
It just takes the trigger wire that key should make empowered to do that much. If low power (amps) you can get a machine gun fluttering from solenoids. Single clicks usually mean bad connections. NO clicks or sounds needs testing why.
I said plain test light for a beginning. You would end up load testing battery which AZ might have failed at AND check for voltage drop in the main heavy gauge wires indicative that wire integrity is not up to par but we aren't there quite yet.
With NO reaction at all you need to see where power does or doesn't go. If starter got power and did nothing or solenoid got triggered and didn't make a peep it would be highly likely it's bad. Starter comes with that together.
Just to prevent a mistake on my part do follow positive battery cable that it is one not interrupted along the way to starter by anything. Not certain if they used a solenoid part way but none shown for a parts look up which can mean nothing where I looked as they are famously wrong many times.
Remember, no available AMPs (power) is any stronger than the weakest link in cables both ground and positive. If that poor usually nothing will work when starter if it was good was attempted and reset clocks, radio pre-sets or alarms.
Safety if not aware playing with battery and cables. Disconnect negative at battery if cleaning or removing for any reason first and put on last if touching anything that is positive so you don't short out powered things with tools especially,
